How Do I Learn More About Project Management?
By Dwight Husband, President-Elect, and Jon Fontenot, VP - Communications
People interested in becoming project managers often ask what the best way is to learn more about the project management profession or the Project Management Institute (PMI).
The best way to gain more information about PMI is to attend one of PMI Atlanta’s monthly dinner meetings. In these meetings, you can network with any of the hundreds of project managers who attend, hear relevant topics from project managers giving presentations in the meetings, and discuss project management and business analyst job openings with any of the several sourcing vendors who participate in the pre-dinner activities.
Potential project managers can especially benefit from the Newcomers Meeting that starts ahead of the dinner meeting at 5:15 p.m. Details about the January Dinner Meeting can be found on the PMI Atlanta chapter Web site.
Another great resource for learning about the project management profession is to visit the PMI Global Web site. Here, potential project managers can obtain information about becoming a member of PMI; see a listing of global project management events; learn more about certifying in one of PMI’s professional credentials, like the PMP® and the PgMP®; and learn about numerous project management training opportunities.
Another important way to learn about PMI is to become a volunteer for one of the committees that operates PMI Atlanta. Positions are frequently available in Technology, Communications, Operations, Membership, Professional Growth, and Programs. Volunteer positions are posted on the chapter Web site at this link. If you see a position that you can fill, send an e-mail to the VP of Membership expressing your interest.
If you are interested in project management, we hope that these suggestions help in your quest for more information about the world’s foremost project management organization. If you are already a project manager, we hope these resources help you identify ways to further your education in the profession.
